Problems At Black Entertainment Television (B.E.T.) Part 1

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

BET-Investor-LogoUPDATE: Below link is a story from the Huffington Post regarding problems with Mr. Bill Jones and Ms Tonya Hart, two legends in African American media who were refused coverage of the B.E.T. Awards. Article from 7-10-2014.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tanya-young-williams/exclusive-bet-awards-deni_b_5561433.html?utm_hp_ref=entertainment&ir=Entertainment

I have been very silent about this issue readers. Trying not to sound like a cry baby. But I said I have to speak out this time regarding Black Entertainment Television aka B.E.T.

For those of you who do not know, I have been producing “Music Inner City TV” since 1990. December 19,1990 I aired my first program with guest the legendary MC Lyte followed by Seattle native Sir Mix-A-Lot.

It was my dream to be in the music industry since I was a teenager watching Don Cornelius and Soul Train on TV. I said I want to be like him. Hosting my own TV or radio program. What a dream!

It took awhile but I started to have my dream come true and I even had a chance to tell the late Mr. Cornelius that he was my idol. That was great that I had a chance to tell him that. Dreams do come true folks!

Even suffering a terrible fire in 2005 and having a very serious operation in late 2010 in which I caught pnemounia and lost most of my right lung and more, I have kept my show on the air for more than 23 years here in the Seattle/Tacoma, Washington area and Western Washington state. I have dealt with plenty of hate and jealous feelings but again, “Music Inner City TV” is still on the air. We currently broadcast 24-7 on Comcast-Xfinity On-Demand all over Western Washington state.

Over the years we have been lucky enough to interview legends like Ike Turner, Rick James, Al Green, George Duke, Quincy Jones, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Paul McCartney, Dionne Warwick, Micheal Jordan, Big Daddy Kane, Chaka Khan and many more INCLUDING media icon Oprah Winfrey! BUT for some reason the PR Dept at B.E.T have decided for the last seven years to turn our TV crew down for red carpet coverage of the B.E.T Awards. This has become a problem folks.

In my strong opinion their is ONE person with B.E.T who is responsible for “Music Inner City TV” being at home and watching the event on TV and online at bet.com  And when I watched the coverage online I notice other programs on the red carpet that makes me wonder why am I at home year after year instead of being in Los Angeles and doing interviews.  I also go online to You Tube and notice outlets like “Black Hollywood Today” putting video on You Tube from the red capet at the B.E.T Awards and I say to myself how did they get on the carpet? How and why?

I am also aware of another outlet/company that has a problem with the PR Dept at B.E.T. It seems there is a few (or maybe one) very arrogant and mean people/person at B.E.T that hold grudges with people. For instance about 8 years ago I had a difference of opinion with a person in B.E.T PR Dept/management while I was in L.A. for the B.E.T Awards.

I was placed in the media room again. Not on the red carpet and I asked this person why. Things got a little heated between us. Since then, I have told this person I am sorry etc. BUT this person in my STRONG opinion has NOT let me reapeat has NOT forgot our  disagreement and has made sure yours truly Gordon Curvey and my crew WILL NEVER be on the red carpet again. It has been very depressing on my part when for the last seven years I get the same paragraph from B.E.T turning “Music Inner City TV” down for red carpet coverage. Something is very very wrong and I would like to find out what is the problem.

Last year B.E.T. called the Seattle Police on me because they thought I was suicidal after being turned down again for the B.E.T Awards but I was not suicidal readers. I was just upset that my outlet was and is being treated wrong. I was also upset this year after being refused coverage. It has taken me a week or so to cool off.

It is fun being on the red carpet doing interviews myself or running the camera. It is not work at all. And if you know about my program, EVERYONE is asked in our final question to speak to the youth about staying in school and stopping the violence etc.

But the PR Dept and B.E.T has not allowed me to interview entertainers at the B.E.T Awards for seven years in row. While other programs with much less time on the air and much less of a audience is on the red carpet having fun and doing interviews for their audience. Is it political or is it who you know? Or is a person at B.E.T holding a grudge? I think it is the last question.

I think this person doing this to me and my audience should be fired. I think it is very very wrong what this person has done to me and it hurts me and my audience here in the Northwest on TV and worldwide on the net at “Music Inner City News Magazine” www.musicinnercity.com  Will I ever be allowed to cover the B.E.T Awards on the red carpet? Who knows. My health is not the best and I may not even be here next year. Only god knows. But as of now if it was up to B.E.T and this one person who has stopped my coverage on the red carpet for seven years in row….I will NEVER be allowed to cover the B.E.T Awards on the red carpet. This is truly truly sad for me and my audience. We are the ONLY program of it type produced in the Northwest of the U.S. This should NOT happen readers!!

Williams “MNF” Opening Pulled After He Calls President “Hitler”

ARTICLE FROM huffingtonpost.com (Full story click here)

Since 1991 country singer Hank Williams Jr. song was at start of every “Monday Night Football” game but after his unreal statements about President Barack Obama on Fox News.

Williams went on Fox News and compered President Obama to HITLER! I just cannot believe this clown said this on national TV about our President! Totally shocked!

So ESPN pulled his theme song from MNF. I hope for good. Williams should hold a press conference as soon as possible to say he is sorry for making that stupid comment. Will he do it? We will see.

Here is a question readers. Why does racist things continue to happen to President Obama? Time and time again we read about insensitive and racist comments and statements about the President. It is just terrible!!

But President Obama is a cool dude and he just let’s it roll over his back and moves on. Bottom line is the Tea Party and the right and Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh etc are doing EVERY THING TO MAKE PRESIDENT OBAMA A ONE TERM PRESIDENT.

This is a fact. So it helps clowns like Hank Williams Jr. make crazy statements comparing President Obama to Hitler! Again I can’t believe he said that!!   Gordon Curvey

Total Lack Of Diversity On Sports Radio Stations In Seattle

This is Part 2 of my series of stories regarding local sports radio stations in Seattle, Washington. Two stations who cover sports in Seattle, have a grand total of ZERO African Americans on the air on a regular basis. The stations are sports radio KJR and 710 ESPN.

KJR has been on the air for more than 19 years and 710 ESPN has been on the air for about two years in the Seattle/Tacoma radio market. Again, no African Americans have been on the air with his or hers own program during the time these stations have been on the air. This is wrong readers.

When African Americans and people of color dominate the three major sports (football, basketball and baseball) it is wrong in my strong opinion to have a completely all white staffs on the two local sports stations. I am TIRED of hearing white guys interviewing African Americans and people of color on the air who they cannot relate to what so ever!!!

ONLY my friend Rick Dupree has been on the air. But he was only a semi-regular. He was fired and RE-HIRED again only to leave KJR because he saw no hope for himself to have his own regular program. So he left.

The current on air staff on KJR is Mitch Levy, Dave “Softy” Mahler, Ian Furness and Elise Woodward with Dick Fain on the weekend. Recently a former host on KJR, Jeff Aaron was brought back to have his own program on the weekends.

Also recently, “Hot Shot” Scott was hired to be on the air on KJR with the “The Gasman” during the weekdays to replace the departed “The Groz”. Scott was a DJ on sister station KUBE93.

On 710 ESPN it is Mike Salk, Brock Huard, “The Groz” Dave Grosby and Kevin Calabro and Jim Moore on the air. All the hosts on 710 ESPN and KJR are white. But to make matters worse, as far as I know, their are no African Americans or people of color in sales, as producers and for sure in management. This is wrong.

Seattle is a city known for it’s diversity. But in sports radio here in Seattle, diversity is a no show. The question is why? Well the answer is called the “ole boy network” in radio,TV and radio plus newspapers where whites help other whites to obtain employment while African Americans and people of color are left on the sidelines.

As I said earlier, “Hot Shot” Scott and Jeff Aaron was recently hired on KJR. Both of whom had ties to KJR already with Scott as a dj on sister station KUBE93 and Aaron as a former employee with KJR. For sure, the “ole boy network” is the reason both of them were hired.

On 710 ESPN, Brock Huard had ZERO radio experience but was hired. Jim Moore is a newspaper man who worked for the P.I. which is no longer around. Mike Salk came from Boston. Kevin Calabro and “The Groz” Grosby I have no problem with. And I have no problem with Dick Fain and Elise Woodward on KJR. Others, I have a problem with.

Recently I sent KJR host Dave Malher a text after a recent Husky football game in which QB Jake Locker did not have a good game. Mahler had given me his number months earlier.

Mahler sent me a return text calling me a “asshole” and “a nut job psycho” “I am as crazy as I am stupid” other very negative names. One text Mahler sent had to be modified by my phone company and removed!! It was wrong for Mahler to call me these derogatory names.

What is going on in sports radio here in Seattle is a total lack of inclusion of African Americans and people of color on a regular basis on ESPN 710 and KJR. The problem is management at the two stations seem not to care about this problem.

The management at KJR flat out LIED to African American leadership about hiring and diversity. FLAT OUT LIED. It is time for a chance at KJR and 710 ESPN. The hosts don’t care, the producers don’t care, and for sure management does not care. But one thing for sure………I care!!!!!

Racism is alive and well because all you have to do is look at 710 ESPN and sportsradio KJR here in Seattle. Dave Mahler’s texts to me shows for sure that there is work to be done.

Local newspaper, The Seattle Times has a sports editor who refuses to allow his writers to do a story on what I am writing about here. Why? Because he has writers at the Times like Jerry Brewer (who is African American) and Steve Kelly that are “in bed” with KJR. They are on the air as guests on the station. And Jim Moore who writes for the Seattle PI website, also refuses to write about this because he is on the air on 710 ESPN.This is Part 2 of my series of stories regarding local sports radio stations in Seattle, Washington. “King Of Pop” Micheal Jackson Died One Year Ago

“One Man Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

Today marked the one year anniversary of the passing of the “King Of Pop” MJ, Micheal Jackson. It was a very sad day last year when I learned of the death of MJ.

I was cleaning up my place and passed by the TV and saw the headlines on CNN and I could not believe it. Micheal Jackson has died at the age of 50. I was shocked. And truth be told I am still shocked.

Word is out MJ’s daddy Joe is going to file a wrongful death lawsuit against MJ’s doctor Conrad Murrey for the death of his famous son. I don’t blame Joe for keeping up the fight.

The truth needs to come out about the death of Jackson.

No one will EVER touch MJ as a entertainer. NO ONE!! He is and will always be the “King Of Pop”

Listen to “Music Inner City Radio” on 1150am KKNW every Friday night at 10pm in the Seattle area. And the show streams online at http://www.1150kknw.com

Tiger Woods To Return To Playing At The Masters In April

ARTICLE FROM pga.com (Full story click here)

Well it is about time. The #1 player in the world of golf Tiger Woods is returning to competition on the course at the 2010 Masters in April.

I know fans are happy, CBS, NBC, ESPN, ABC etc is happy, advertisers are happy.

If you are a golf fan, you are happy that Tiger is returning to play.

With Woods returning, that is more cash for everyone. No matter what you think about the problems of Tiger’s love life, one thing is for sure. He is the best golfer maybe in the history of the game and the game needs Tiger Woods.

Yes certain players on the tour blasted Tiger about his problems. Even a older legend like Tom Watson said some things about Tiger. But I am sure Tiger will make folks forget all that win he starts kicking their butt on the golf course and wins events just like before.

Commercials are running already on CBS about the Masters and the return of Tiger. When Tiger arrives at Augusta, it will be one of the biggest days in the history of sports on TV or TV period besides President Obama taking office.

I will be watching. Like I said before the only time I watch golf is when Tiger is near the lead and maybe John Daly. That’s it.

So welcome back Tiger. The sports world needs you and golf needs you. I hope Tiger learned from his huge mistakes and becomes a better man, a better husband and a better father.

Chris Brown Asks For Radio And Fans Support

ARTICLE FROM essence.com (Full story click here)

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

Singer Chris Brown is doing something he thought he would never do. And that is to ask for his fans support in buying his new cd and is also asking radio to play his music.

Ever since his problem of beating of singer Rihanna, he has had problems with his career.

It is for sure not like it was before the problems came down on him.

But in reality Brown cannot blame anyone but himself for his problems. He brought them on himself. He should have did what he did to the beautiful Rihanna.

Having said that, the question is this. Is it time for fans to forgive Brown and buy his music? Is it time for radio to start playing his music again? Truth be told I do not even hear any past Chris Brown music on the radio like “Kiss-Kiss-Kiss” and others. Do you?

Brown is doing every thing courts have asked him to do and more. He is even going to schools and community centers to talk to talk to youth etc.

What will it take for radio and fans to support Chris Brown like before the Rihanna incident? It does not help when programs on TV like “The Insider” and “Showbiz Tonight” continue to blast Brown when ever they can.

This story is very very interesting. Let’ see if the negative treatment of Chris Brown will continue. For his sake and career, I hope the negativity stops.
