Watch via smartphones, tablets, mac or pc! Special thanks to the Seattle Seahawks!!

I am sure that many many of you will disagree with me and what I am about to say here on my website. If so, I am sorry but it is truly how I feel about 49er QB and former guest on “Music Inner City Television” Colin Kaepernick. (pic with myself and Kaepernick)

First of all I am sure many of you have never met Colin. Well I have met him and interviewed him. He has appeared on “M.I.C-TV” two times. I interviewed him a few years ago in Los Angeles at the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party. And he also appeared on our program a few years ago at the Body@ESPYs pre show for the ESPYs also in L.A. Interviewed by Curtis “Boss” Elerson.

Kaepernick is a very intelligent young man. I am hearing and reading a bunch of crap from mostly white folks concerning Colin and his decision not to stand for the national anthem before a 49er per-season game. Ladies and gentlemen I DO NOT have a problem with Kaepernick and his protest.

And if he wants to not stand for the anthem all season, I do not have a problem with that. Colin feels America has not treated African Americans and people of color well and it is the truth. Kaepernick feels America allows racial inequality. Well it is the truth. If you think racism has got better in America because the first African American President..President Barack Obama was elected  and re-elected, you are wrong folks.

It does not matter if you have millions like Colin or if you are homeless, a black man experiences racism in one way or another EACH ANDJackie Robinson EVERY DAY! This is a fact. When Colin says his stance is bigger than football and it would be selfish on his part to look at it any other way. I agree again with Colin. He said that he was not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color. He also said there are bodies in the street and people are getting paid leave and getting away with murder.

Yes, many folks think Kaepernick not standing for the anthem is disrespectful to America. People are saying he picked the wrong way of taking a stance. Well who says? In his mind he feels his way was the way to get attention. I do not have a problem with his feelings.

I have just learned that the great Jackie Robinson said in 1972 that he does not stand up and sing the anthem because of what black people experience in America. WOW!! Jackie Robinson said this folks!! A sports icon and legend! Now decades later, Kaepernick is basically saying what the great Jackie Robinson said decades ago. So now are certain people are going to bash Robinson in his grave? Ummm?

Guys like Seattle Seahawks player Richard Sherman says Colin could have picked another way of speaking up. Well I disagree with Sherman and by the way this is not the first time I have disagreed with Sherman. Real talk. A lot of times I agree with him, a lot of times I do not.

Some say he has basically made his way out of the 49ers camp by taking his stance. He was in a battle for the starting QB position. Head coach Chip Kelly already has a rep for really not getting along with African American players. Would it be a good look for Kelly to cut Colin now? I would say HELL NO!! He would catch hell from the NAACP, the Urban League, Rev Al Sharpton’s National Action League and Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition. Not a good look.

You know what REALLY REALLY GETS ME PISSED? It is listening to sports radio hosts who let’s keep it real, who are mainly white, TRYING to discuss a issue THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT!! And that is the topic of RACE AND RACISM.

I just listened sports radio KJR and Dave Mahler on the Kaepernick situation. I listened to a point then I had to turn the radio off with a quickness and that is for sure.  Mahler TRIED to give his CLUELESS opinions on race and racism. DAVE MAHLER AND MOST WHITE SPORTS RADIO HOSTS DO NOT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCES OF AFRICAN AMERICANS AND PEOPLE OF COLOR IN WHITE DOMINATED AMERICA!!!!!

It turned the radio off when Mahler started to take calls from KJR’s target audience….white suburb living, no African American friends or associates, no knowledge of our society or our culture listeners. Who of course would get on the radio and blast Kaepernick. Then Mahler had the nerve to have a African American former Seattle Seahawks player , Bryce Fisher on his show. I did not have to listen to know what Fisher was going to say because the brotha is a former member of the Air Force. You know he was going to disagree with Kaepernick and his protest.

It again shows something I have fought for and spoken out about for years and that is the inclusion, not the exclusion of African Americans as sports jocks on sports radio. Because readers IT IS A FACT, that whites and African Americans think differently on just about EVERYTHING, including the topics of race and racism.

Keep in mind readers that Colin has NOT broken any NFL rules. The 49ers released a statement supporting Kaepernick’s right to choose whether or not to acknowledge the national anthem.

I saw online that some brainless clowns have burned Kaepernick jerseys to protest the national anthem. Give me a break folks. Of course the folks doing this are NOT African Americans. Today thank goodness I have heard the leading scorer of all time in the NBA and now a community activist the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Seahawk player Michael Bennett and other sports stars support Colin and his protest. Including a mannwho is known for his famous protest in the Olympic’s back in the 60′s, Tommy Smith. That makes me very very happy. If you disagree me…sorry.

This young man is joining Lebron, Melo, CP3, D-Wade, WNBA players and more in speaking out in there own ways about police shooting of African Americans. Readers we know it is WRONG for police getting shot and killed. THIS IS A FACT. Also a fact is this. what Colin Kaepernick said is flat out true. And that is in just about EVERY killing of a African American by cops, they have not been charged or on PAID leave!! This hurts me, it hurts Kaepernick, hurts Melo, CP3, Lebron and D-Wade and millions of other folks.

YES, black on black crime is WRONG and it needs to stop. But also the killing of African Americans by police needs to stop. Sports radio hosts like Dave Mahler and others DO NOT spend time around African Americans in our community. They know NOTHING about us. They are guessing. They “wonder” about us. Guys like Dave Mahler on KJR here in Seattle NEED DIVERSITY TRAINING in a worst way!! It stands out like two left shoes the lack of knowledge guys like Mahler and other folks in the media when issues of race and racism like this Kaepernick protest comes up.

So again I am proud of Colin and protest. It makes me proud to see a man who in reality can take his millions and say f..k black folks! And not say anything about race or racism like Tiger Woods. Micheal Jordan in a surprise to everyone, recently donated to African American organizations and even spoke out about black folks getting shot by police as well as police getting shot. Colin can just get his millions, drive his Jag or Benz and be happy. He has decided not to do that!! He cares about the plight of black people.

The NBA and now the NFL. I am waiting on a few African American Major League Baseball players to stand up and speak out. Let’s see if this will ever happen. Until that time, shout out to Colin Kaepernick. A brotha who even with MILLIONS in the bank has not forgot where he has come from. That is a good look!!

Seattle Writer Good Story On How Basketball Brings Races Together

ARTICLE FROM seattletimes.com (Full story click here)

I have give credit where credit is due. Seattle sports writer Steve Kelly wrote a good story in the Seattle Times (click the link to read) about how basketball helped him and how he realizes how basketball brings black faces and white faces together.

And it is true. No other major sport has the personalities basketball has so in my opinion and Kelly’s it brings us more together as a people.

For instance I went to a game right before the NBA season started at Seattle’s Garfield High School put on by Seattle native and Portland guard Brandon Roy. At the game you saw Asians, East Africans, African Americans and whites in the audience having a good time watching the game of basketball.

I am sorry to say, when you go to a major league baseball game at Safeco Field here in town, the only people of color you see are the ushers and the ones on the teams. It is a little better at NFL games but not much.

But if you look at the audience at a NBA game it is a rainbow of colors. Just like it is in America. It is that way at a high school game, college game and of course the NBA.

Kelly’s article was a great article. I just wish Steve Kelly would be bold enough to write a story in the Seattle Times regarding the radio station he has a show on every week. Sports radio KJR which does the COMPLETE OPPISITE of what his article is about.

The station has ZERO diversity. NONE. In sales, producers, on the air and in management. This does not reflect the fields and courts of America. In my opinion, yes basketball knows about the word DIVERSITY. It helps to bring people together. But Steve a sports radio station which you work for, does not know about the work DIVERSITY nor do they care.      Gordon Curvey

It is the Steelers vs. the Packers in the Super Bowl. I wanted the Jets and Green Bay but it was not meant to be. But it will be a good Super Bowl. To read more on the upcoming Super Bowl and more Click here. Story via sports.yahoo.com

Total Lack Of Diversity On Sports Radio Stations In Seattle

This is Part 2 of my series of stories regarding local sports radio stations in Seattle, Washington. Two stations who cover sports in Seattle, have a grand total of ZERO African Americans on the air on a regular basis. The stations are sports radio KJR and 710 ESPN.

KJR has been on the air for more than 19 years and 710 ESPN has been on the air for about two years in the Seattle/Tacoma radio market. Again, no African Americans have been on the air with his or hers own program during the time these stations have been on the air. This is wrong readers.

When African Americans and people of color dominate the three major sports (football, basketball and baseball) it is wrong in my strong opinion to have a completely all white staffs on the two local sports stations. I am TIRED of hearing white guys interviewing African Americans and people of color on the air who they cannot relate to what so ever!!!

ONLY my friend Rick Dupree has been on the air. But he was only a semi-regular. He was fired and RE-HIRED again only to leave KJR because he saw no hope for himself to have his own regular program. So he left.

The current on air staff on KJR is Mitch Levy, Dave “Softy” Mahler, Ian Furness and Elise Woodward with Dick Fain on the weekend. Recently a former host on KJR, Jeff Aaron was brought back to have his own program on the weekends.

Also recently, “Hot Shot” Scott was hired to be on the air on KJR with the “The Gasman” during the weekdays to replace the departed “The Groz”. Scott was a DJ on sister station KUBE93.

On 710 ESPN it is Mike Salk, Brock Huard, “The Groz” Dave Grosby and Kevin Calabro and Jim Moore on the air. All the hosts on 710 ESPN and KJR are white. But to make matters worse, as far as I know, their are no African Americans or people of color in sales, as producers and for sure in management. This is wrong.

Seattle is a city known for it’s diversity. But in sports radio here in Seattle, diversity is a no show. The question is why? Well the answer is called the “ole boy network” in radio,TV and radio plus newspapers where whites help other whites to obtain employment while African Americans and people of color are left on the sidelines.

As I said earlier, “Hot Shot” Scott and Jeff Aaron was recently hired on KJR. Both of whom had ties to KJR already with Scott as a dj on sister station KUBE93 and Aaron as a former employee with KJR. For sure, the “ole boy network” is the reason both of them were hired.

On 710 ESPN, Brock Huard had ZERO radio experience but was hired. Jim Moore is a newspaper man who worked for the P.I. which is no longer around. Mike Salk came from Boston. Kevin Calabro and “The Groz” Grosby I have no problem with. And I have no problem with Dick Fain and Elise Woodward on KJR. Others, I have a problem with.

Recently I sent KJR host Dave Malher a text after a recent Husky football game in which QB Jake Locker did not have a good game. Mahler had given me his number months earlier.

Mahler sent me a return text calling me a “asshole” and “a nut job psycho” “I am as crazy as I am stupid” other very negative names. One text Mahler sent had to be modified by my phone company and removed!! It was wrong for Mahler to call me these derogatory names.

What is going on in sports radio here in Seattle is a total lack of inclusion of African Americans and people of color on a regular basis on ESPN 710 and KJR. The problem is management at the two stations seem not to care about this problem.

The management at KJR flat out LIED to African American leadership about hiring and diversity. FLAT OUT LIED. It is time for a chance at KJR and 710 ESPN. The hosts don’t care, the producers don’t care, and for sure management does not care. But one thing for sure………I care!!!!!

Racism is alive and well because all you have to do is look at 710 ESPN and sportsradio KJR here in Seattle. Dave Mahler’s texts to me shows for sure that there is work to be done.

Local newspaper, The Seattle Times has a sports editor who refuses to allow his writers to do a story on what I am writing about here. Why? Because he has writers at the Times like Jerry Brewer (who is African American) and Steve Kelly that are “in bed” with KJR. They are on the air as guests on the station. And Jim Moore who writes for the Seattle PI website, also refuses to write about this because he is on the air on 710 ESPN.This is Part 2 of my series of stories regarding local sports radio stations in Seattle, Washington. “Music Inner City News Magazine” is the #1 urban website on the Internet from the Northwest!!

Also a survey was done at 1150am KKNW here in Seattle and a question was asked “What is your favorite program on the station” and a lot of listerners said “Music Inner City Radio” The program airs every Friday at 10pm (unless there is a game and it will right after the game). And the show streams LIVE online at www.1150kknw.com  click “listen live” tab. Podcasts of past programs are on “M.I.C News Magazine” click “podcast” link.

Also watch “Music Inner City TV” on Comcast On-Demand all over Western Washington state 24/7. Just go to “get local” and then “around the sound”

Lack Of Diversity On Sports Radio In Seattle/Part 1

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

As I get ready to have a serious operation this week I have some thoughts I want to share regarding the sports radio situation here in Seattle, Washington (U.S.)

The two stations are 710 ESPN and KJR. 710 ESPN has been on the air for a year or so and KJR for 19 years in the Seattle/Tacoma area. For 19 years KJR has NEVER had a African American with his or hers own regular program. Currently their total workforce has a grand total of ZERO African Americans the last time I checked. That includes producers, over the air, sales and management.

I will talk about 710 ESPN in Part 2 of this story but I want to discuss KJR in Part 1. KJR constantly blasts African Americans and people of color in a negative way with out the other point of view from a African American or person of color. THIS IS UNFAIR!

Words like “THUG” is used by the all white staff of KJR against African Americans and people of color ONLY. The word “THUG” is a code word for the “N” word. It is used by callers and hosts. This word is NEVER used against whites in the sports world. NEVER.

KJR management just hired two more whites to be on the air, Jeff Aaron and Hot Shot Scott. Scott worked at sister station KUBE93 and Aaron used to a sports jock on KJR. Was fired or laid off and now he is back.

It is like the management of KJR do not care about diversity over the air. Or having a African American with his or hers own program. Stephen A. Smith (a African American) is on KJR at 3am but it is not a local show. It is a Fox national program.

A few years ago, their was a meeting held with African American community leaders and KJR management in which PROMISES WERE MADE BY KJR MANAGEMENT. Promises that included working on diversity in hiring and over the air. Promises where made to myself and other community folks like former Seattle NAACP chairman Carl Mack.

But then Mack left town and KJR backed off the promises that was made. In other words, KJR management LIED TO ME AND CARL MACK AND OTHERS. This is wrong. KJR management has shown with the hiring of Scott and Aaron that they DO NOT care about having a African American over the air on KJR. Period.

KJR is like a frat club or Elk’s Club in Vermont or South Dakota. No blacks in sight. They are friends and buddies instead of workmates. They call and text each other after work etc. Even the bumper music is all white most of the time. Bumper music is a term for the music played in the background after a commercial etc. No T.I. or Drake or Jay Z or Kanye West or Lil Wayne or Rihanna or classic soul like Stevie Wonder or The Isley Bros etc. Instead it is Aerosmith or ZZ Top and The Little River Band etc or even on Mitch Levy’s show, Frank Sinatra etc.

Issues of race comes up all the time on KJR and the all white staff CANNOT RELATE. They do not have a clue on the topic. Also it hurts me hearing the KJR jocks constantly interviewing African Americans THEY CANNOT RELATE TO what so ever. These cats are from the inner city or deep south etc. Hearing Mitch Levy and Dave Mahler and Ian Furness and now Aaron interviewing these inner city cats turns my stomach!!

The only jocks I like on KJR is Dick Fain and Elise Woodward. Yes they are white, but Woodward played basketball and has dealt with African Americans and people of color and Fain coaches at Mt. Rainier High School and deals with inner city cats all the time.

This is Part 1 of “Lack Of Diversity On Sports Radio” Part 2 I will deal with local sports writers who are “in bed” with sports radio, Mitch Levy’s “Bigger Dance” contest and discuss 710 ESPN and more.

Please watch “Music Inner City TV” Ustream programs live and on-demand. We will feature music videos and discuss issues in entertainment, urban sports and soon we will have contests to give away cd’s etc.

Just click the Ustream links above.

Local Seattle Sports Radio Did Not Want Romar As Head Coach

I watched the University of Washington Huskies get beat by West Virginia I just though of a flashback of sports radio hosts here in Seattle not wanting Lorenzo Romar.

Few years ago the Huskies were looking for a new head basketball coach here in Seattle. A lot of names were mentioned at the time. One of which was current head basketball coach Lorenzo Romar.

Also mentioned was the head coach at Gonzaga, Mark Few and local high school star and at the time college head coach Quinn Snyder and others.

On local sports radio KJR here in Seattle, talk show hosts Mitch Levy and Dave “Softy” Mahler and Steve Sandmayer got on the radio and demanded the UW DO NOT HIRE ROMAR. They did it over and over and over again over the air.

They said “what has he done” as a head coach etc. Mahler was the most vocal. The day of the press conference at the UW naming Romar as head coach at the UW, Mahler was blasting the head people at the UW for hiring Romar. The Mahler and Levy at KJR wanted a guy like Snyder or Few. No Romar!!!

I went to the press conference to confront Mahler and ask him why is he there covering the press conference and asking questions when he was on the air blasting Romar the SAME MORNING!! I will admit things got a little heated between myself and Mahler. I did not like him being there acting like everything is cool when he and others at KJR did not want Romar as the new head basketball coach at the University of Washington.

Well a few years later, look at the University of Washington basketball program now!! They were in the Sweet 16!! And Romar has helped send players like Brandon Roy and Nate Robinson and Spencer Hawes to the NBA. Even former player Will Conroy has been up and down in the NBA. Lorenzo Romar has put the U-Dub on the NCAA basketball map.

I get kind of upset when I hear Levy and Mahler on KJR kissing his butt now, knowing they DID NOT want Romar as the head coach. I wish I had a recording of the negative stuff Mahler and Levy was saying about the possible hiring of Romar.

Anyway big shout out to Romar, Quincy Pondexter, Isaiah Thomas, Matthew Bryan-Amanings and the rest of the University of Washington Huskies for going all the way to the Sweet 16. You made us Seattle area sports fan happy!

And also watch ESPN “Right Now” for more news and video from NCAA basketball games and the march to the final four.
