“Music Inner City TV” Bio: Cathy Hughes
Cathy Hughes is a African American entrepreneur, radio and TV personality and business executive. Hughes founded the media company called Radio One and started TV One.
The company went public in 1998, making Cathy the first and only African American woman to head a publicity traded corporation at the time. She is for sure a trailblazer who has helped put African American owned media on the map.
In the 70′s, Hughes created the urban radio format called “The Quiet Storm” on Howard University’s radio station WHUR, with it’s very first DJ she decided on the late Melvin Lindsey. Before radio, Hughes worked for a African American newspaper called “The Omaha Star” Hughes started her career in 1969 at KOWH in Omaha, but then left for job in Washington D.C.
In 1973, Hughes became the General Sales Manager of Howard University’s radio station WHUR-FM and helped to increase station revenue from $250,000 to $3 million in it’s first year!!
Soon in 1975, Cathy became the first woman Vice President and GM of a station in the nation’s capital. In 1980, Hughes founded Radio One, and with former husband Dewey Hughes, bought WOL-AM 1450 in D.C. After the previous employees had destroyed the facility, she faced financial problems and soon lost her home and moved with her young son to live at the station.
Cathy Hughes fortunes started to change when revamped the r&b station to a 24-7 talk radio format with the theme “Information Is Power” Hughes served as the stations morning show host for 11 years. WOL is still the most listed to talk radio station in D.C.
Radio One went on to own 70 radio stations in nine major markets in the U.S. As of 2007, Hughes son Alfred Liggins serves as CEO and president of Radio One and Hughes as chairperson.
In January 2004, Cathy started TV One, a national cable and satellite TV network which bills itself as the “lifestyle and entertainment network for African American adults”. Both Cathy and her son have been named Entrepreneur of the Year by the company Ernst & Young. In 2015, a local business organization unofficially named the corner of 4th Street and H Street NE in Washington D.C. “Cathy Hughes Corner”
I have a lot of respect for Cathy Hughes. She is a strong lady in a man dominated field. She is bringing to the table something that is needed in media and that is diversity. Diversity is badly needed in radio and tv. For instance here in Seattle, there is ONE African American true news reporter in our area in Essix Porter on KIRO-TV. On radio in a market where Ms. Hughes does not have a station, there is barely a regular African American voice on radio.
One of my favorite programs is a program called “Unsung” on TV One. I never miss it. “Unsung” and “Shark Tank” (not on TV One) are my favorite programs on TV. So I hope Ms Hughes and TV One would open a new radio station here in Seattle with a strong signal. That would be great. I hope you will support TV One and Radio One. A TRUE African American owned and operated media company.

I hope you readers read the above article about why African American businesses or do not do well compared to white, Asian, Hispanics and now East African owned businesses.
There is a reason for this folks. As a black owned business here in Seattle for more than twenty years, sorry to say my worst “enemies” have been black folks. No support from local promoters, no support from hip-hop/r&b artists, and no support from black owned businesses. BUT these same folks will in a hurry take their cash to the “majority” owned businesses.
“Music Inner City News Magazine” is in the TOP 500,000 IN THE WORLD in website traffic and getting better everyday. Keep in mind there are at least 20 to 30 million registered websites in the world. Plus we are in the top 100,000 in the U.S. These stats are from www.alexa.com (type in sportsinnercity.com in the search area)
And “Music Inner City TV” is getting PLENTY of traffic everyday. And we are the ONLY locally produced urban program on Comcast/Xfinity On Demand here in Washington state. But black folks here will give me EVERY EXCUSE under the sun NOT to advertise with us. Then if I say something about this issue I am “whining”. This is crazy!!
As one of the articles I saw this morning said on this topic said “It seems a lot of black people are racist towards each other MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY as well as FINANCIALLY”
And “When black folks work on the racism towards black owned businesses it is then we will see black businesses prosper”
Also readers, Hispanics-advertise, Chinese/Asians-advertise, East Africans-advertise BUT as a whole blacks do not. Want a example? Go pick up a black owned newspaper and then go pick a Asian or Hispanic owned newspaper OR watch a Asian or Hispanic owned TV show or network. Then watch my TV show “Music Inner City” here in Seattle or online right here. This will make my point.
Sorry to say but Koreans are making MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of dollars selling black hair products. I can park my car in front of a Korean supply store and will see black female after black female going inside to spend cash. EVERYDAY the Koreans here in Seattle and else where are laughing all the way to the bank!
I don’t care how they obtained loans to open up new businesses! We as black folks do not have a problem getting a new SUV or Caddie or Lexus but what about opening a new business like the Koreans and other Asians, the Hispanics and now the East Africans are doing?
President Obama and others talk to us about going our own businesses. BUT the problem is, when black folks open new businesses, black folks need to support them. I will be back with Part 2 on this topic in a few days. Gordon Curvey

I ran into this article so I want to share it with you the readers of “Music Inner City News Magazine” The question is why do certain rappers keep going to jail?
T.I., Gucci Mane and DMX and others go in and out of jail the question is why folks? In the above article they ask “Is it the thug life” or the hood they grew up in with drugs etc all around? What is the reason?
I am tired of hearing about T.I. and others going in and out of jail. These cats need to realize they have young people who look up to them. Why would these dudes be in a situation to maybe get in trouble?
They need to be around positive people and realize that when they walk out there door people are looking at them. And as soon as they do something wrong BAM!! It is all over the Internet. In Media Take Out and right here on “M.I.C News Magazine”
I hope and pray that T.I. for instance will keep his butt out of jail for the benefit of his company and his fans and most of all his family. I want to hear positive positive stories about rap/hip-hop artists. I am tired of hearing about the bad crap. I hope you feel the same readers. Gordon Curvey

Well it is about time. The #1 player in the world of golf Tiger Woods is returning to competition on the course at the 2010 Masters in April.
I know fans are happy, CBS, NBC, ESPN, ABC etc is happy, advertisers are happy.
If you are a golf fan, you are happy that Tiger is returning to play.
With Woods returning, that is more cash for everyone. No matter what you think about the problems of Tiger’s love life, one thing is for sure. He is the best golfer maybe in the history of the game and the game needs Tiger Woods.
Yes certain players on the tour blasted Tiger about his problems. Even a older legend like Tom Watson said some things about Tiger. But I am sure Tiger will make folks forget all that win he starts kicking their butt on the golf course and wins events just like before.
Commercials are running already on CBS about the Masters and the return of Tiger. When Tiger arrives at Augusta, it will be one of the biggest days in the history of sports on TV or TV period besides President Obama taking office.
I will be watching. Like I said before the only time I watch golf is when Tiger is near the lead and maybe John Daly. That’s it.
So welcome back Tiger. The sports world needs you and golf needs you. I hope Tiger learned from his huge mistakes and becomes a better man, a better husband and a better father.

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey
Singer Chris Brown is doing something he thought he would never do. And that is to ask for his fans support in buying his new cd and is also asking radio to play his music.
Ever since his problem of beating of singer Rihanna, he has had problems with his career.
It is for sure not like it was before the problems came down on him.
But in reality Brown cannot blame anyone but himself for his problems. He brought them on himself. He should have did what he did to the beautiful Rihanna.
Having said that, the question is this. Is it time for fans to forgive Brown and buy his music? Is it time for radio to start playing his music again? Truth be told I do not even hear any past Chris Brown music on the radio like “Kiss-Kiss-Kiss” and others. Do you?
Brown is doing every thing courts have asked him to do and more. He is even going to schools and community centers to talk to talk to youth etc.
What will it take for radio and fans to support Chris Brown like before the Rihanna incident? It does not help when programs on TV like “The Insider” and “Showbiz Tonight” continue to blast Brown when ever they can.
This story is very very interesting. Let’ see if the negative treatment of Chris Brown will continue. For his sake and career, I hope the negativity stops.
