Everyday Gentrification Bothers Me In Seattle’s Central Area

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

central-district_chart-780x520Ladies and gentlemen I am a person who grew up on 30th and East Spring St. here in Seattle, Washington’s Central Area. I went to Madrona Elementary School and Meany Middle School. And then Roosevelt in North Seattle.

I used to be in a African American neighborhood. I went to Madrona with plenty of African American kids. Black teachers and principals and I felt relaxed. The playground at recess or lunchtime was full of black kids and faces. I got my haircut at Erma’s Barber Shop and Daye’s Barber Shop and went to Joe’s Grocery Store owned by Joe and Mea and Madrona Pharmacy to by candy and sports magazines. Went to IGA Store.

I went to the Doll House and Sammy’s for great hamburgers and fries. I also went to Jordan’s for candy and magazines and pop etc. I walked up East Union St to walk to Meany Middle School. Past KZAM Radio and see the dj’s talking on the air. There was a Chinese place to buy food on East Union and the food was great. Just like it was at Mrs. Helens and Oscars on East Madison.

During the summer Madrona Park was packed on three courts with guys and gals shooting hoops. There used to be African American plays at Black Arts West on 34th and East Union. The Black Panthers offices were on 34th too.

I used to go to the Red Apple for stuff too. They had great baked chicken at Red Apple at Promenade 23. Promenade 23 was part owned by a family friend, the late Jimmy Sumler. Used to run into him all the time. He was a member of a social club that my late dad Leon Curvey was a member too called the Westerners. Jimmy also owned Jimmy’s on East Madison. They also had great food!!

I grew up going to church and Sunday school at Mt. Zion where the late great Rev Samuel McKinney was the pastor. Of course Pastor Mckinney recently pasted away. RIP to Rev. He was a great man.

Because of gentrification “my Madrona area” is no longer the same and it hurts me deeply. I am a Adult School Crossing Guard on 34th and East Union right by the school I went to from kindergarten thur 6th grade, Madrona School. I leave my job in the morning and afternoon EVERY DAY feeling sad that I do not hardly see black faces. I see plenty of white folks driving expensive Audi’s and BMWs and Mercedes and Volvos etc.  I have been on 32rd and now 34th and East Union on my job for going on four years.

And every day I leave sad and get in my car feeling sad. Saying to myself what has happened to the Central Area I grew up in. When ever I see a black face I am VERY VERY happy. Mainly I see white folks and white folks walking their freakin dogs. Some walking three dogs at a time. Big poodles and little dogs.  Sorry to say, white folks hang with other white folks. They act like they “own the Madrona area”  NO they do not own the Madrona as far as I am concerned.

And as a school crossing guard I have sorry to say experienced racism on the job. Shocking this would happen to me a African American in a former African American area. But it is true readers. The subtle racism by white folks which is the worse.

Like for instance parents from a special Seattle Public School named TOPs whose kids catch the bus to school at 34th and East Union where I am at every morning. TOPS is a school for kids who are very very smart and they have a different form of education than regular Seattle Public Schools. I slowly began to notice something.

What I found out was most of the parents from this school and even a few of the kids acted “uppity” or “special”. Many times I speak to the parents and say good morning and they barely say anything or if I would not say good morning they would not say good morning too. Many many days right before I leave to get in my car I say “See everyone later and have a good day” and most of the parents would look at me like I am the Statue Of Liberty. They would say nothing. Basically only one or two would say something.

So I decided to not say anything to them anymore. I am not going to go out my way to speak to these “uppity” acting TOPS parents any more. It is not going to happen the rest of the school year. Sorry to say one of the parents who acts “uppity” is African American.

Gentrification is going on in a lot of major cities in the U.S. In L.A. and New York and other cities. Taxes go up, whites move in and African Americans move out. Because of gentrification the Central Area here in Seattle has turned into yuppie land. Powell Burnett Park and other parks in the area full of white folks and there kids and of course their dogs.

My good friend Wyking Garrett is doing a huge job trying to keep a little of the CA that gentrification has not hit yet. But he has a very hard job ladies and gentlemen.

It hurts me when I drive down 23rd and pass by Earls Cut and Styles and see basically nothing but white folks. It is like I am dreaming. I is amazing that this has happened and happened quickly. Just look at the chart I have here. To me it is very very devastating  as a guy who grew up on 3oth and East Spring St.. It is just unreal folks!!

There was a time when most white folks would fly past 23rd and East Union or 22rd/23rd and East Madison where Oscars and Deano’s was  in their cars like they were driving in the Indy 500!! With their windows up etc. They wanted no part of the Central Area.

Now all I see is white folks on East Union and East Madison like I said, walking their dogs or walking with another group of white folks, never do I see white folks walking with some black folks. They hang to themselves. And most of time do not speak to African Americans. They will look at black folks like they are criminals or gang members. Or like a black dude will steal their cell phone.

I will give some more of my thoughts on the gentrification of Seattle’s Central Area soon. A area where sky high rent for apartments and town homes and homes have forced African Americans out and whites in. When I see the Red Apple gone, Richlens gone, it hurts me. It hurts me each and every day!!

Why Is Trump Going After Amazon? It Is Obvious!!

ARTICLE FROM politico.com (Full story click here)

jeff_bezos_trump_splitI am here in Seattle, Washington where huge corporations like Microsoft, Starbucks and yes Amazon main headquarters are in the area. And it seems your President (not mine) Trump is going after one of these huge corporations. The questions is why?

It seems Trump is going after Amazon for one reason and one reason only. It is because he knows that Amazon leader Jeff Bezos also owns the Washington Post. A news organization that has been a big time critic of Donald Trump since he has been a so called President. So Trump is going after Bezos.

So the pathetic Trump is now making threats to raise postal rates on the tech giant Amazon which many consider this a war between Trump and Bezos. This threat cost Amazon over $35 billion in stock on April 2nd.

It seems higher postal rates could hurt Amazons online profits which depends on the Post Office. Come on ladies and gentlemen unless you are the great and former guest on “Music Inner City TV” Stevie Wonder you can see what is going on. It is like what the another former guest on “M.I.C-TV” the late great James Brown sang “It Is The Big Payback” by Trump. It is a outrage!!

Trump is trying to lower the boom on Bezos and Amazon because of the Washington Post. People are saying Trump’s charges that Amazon is exploiting the U.S. Postal Service is “made up” and Trump’s charges are hurting Amazon and it’s shares.

What Donald Trump is doing to Amazon is just plain stupid and just plain wrong. It is a perfect example of retaliation by the arrogant Trump. It again shows me what a REAL PRESIDENT and a man with style and class in President Barack Obama and the great former First Lady Michelle Obama and Sen. Hilary Clinton said and that is Donald J. Trump is unfit to be President.

Bennett/Sherman Follow Reynolds Out Of Seattle!

ARTICLE FROM seattletimes.com (Full story click here)

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

meandbennett2016I knew this was going to happen sports fans. The removal of Micheal Bennett from the Seahawks or from my city of Seattle. And it happened because Bennett was traded to the champion Eagles for a 5th round pic and some dude no one knows of.

The Seahawks removed Bennett from the team because in my strong opinion him being a leader in speaking out on the way former guest on “Music Inner City TV” QB Colin Kaepernick was treated by the NFL. Plus Bennett took stands on the African American sista who was shot by the police here in Seattle and other issues that have to do with the African American community.

Now Richard Sherman is gone. Signed with the 49ers less than a day after being cut by the Seahawks. He signed a three year contract. Wow it will be very interesting when the Seahawks and 49ers meet.

Sherman did a lot in the community for inner city kids. Held a big softball game every year at Safeco Field. He did not have it last summer. Ummm I wonder if that was a signal of his departure from Seattle? Maybe so ladies and gentleman. All I know is Sherman and Bennett are gone. Sherman is a 49er and Bennett is a Eagle.

Bennett had became a leader in speaking up on issues PLUS he did a lot for young African American kids. Speaking at schools and community centers in the Seattle/Tacoma area. But I guess the Seahawks said enough is enough we have to get rid of you. Sherman did the same.

Of course Bennett took a stand for Kap in not standing for the anthem. As did Sherman. In the end the Seahawks said no more of this radical stuff shermanso bye bye Micheal Bennett and Philly will say hello Micheal Bennett. Surely it is not because of Bennett’s play on the field he was traded.

This is a fact. Some say the “Legion Of Boom” for the Seattle Seahawks is over. The Seahawks have made massive changes to it’s coaching staff. Hell just about everybody is new except for Coach Carroll.

In my opinion the Seahawks have got afraid after a 9-7 season. I just do not understand readers. Bennett has been traded and guess what sports fans? Richard Sherman another outspoken African American man who like Bennett are very intelligent, follows Bennett out of Seattle and maybe even Earl Thomas. This is crazy in my opinion.

Bennett and Sherman follow another African American sports star out of Seattle who took off their uniform and went on to help the African American community and youth. former Seattle Mariner Harold Reynolds.

haroldreynoldsReynolds along with Wayne Perryman formed a organization (read link above) to try to help young black kids to look good when looking for a job and other helpful things. Guess what readers? Soon Reynolds was shipped out of Seattle just like Sherman and Bennett were shipped out of Seattle by the Seahawks in my opinion.

Yes I know MANY will disagree with my thoughts. Guess what? I don’t give a damn! I am hurt that Bennett and Sherman are gone from my city. Bennett has formed a relationship with schools and he said that will continue even if he is in Philly. I do not know about Sherman and the relationships he formed here.

Hell If I was a African American sports star in Seattle, I would be afraid to really speak up and help the African American community like Harold Reynolds and Bennett and Sherman. Because if they do, they are asking for a ticket out of Seattle!

Why Do African Americans March on MLK Day In Seattle?

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

kenya marketLadies and gentlemen thanks for coming to my website to read my posts and my thoughts here on “Music Inner City News Magazine” and “Sports Inner City Online” www.sportsinnercity.com  It means a lot. It really does. One thing that bothers me is MLK Day here in Seattle.

WHY do African Americans get together every year at Garfield High School to talk so called “unity” and to speak about racism and exclusion of African Americans and people of color and more topics concerning people of color? Why? To me every MLK Day here in Seattle gets me very very upset! People then march to downtown. FOR WHAT????

Watching African Americans “trying” to have some type of unity FOR ONE FREAKIN DAY!!! It is a damn joke ladies and gentlemen! Do we as African Americans have unity during the year? I SAY HELL NO!!

Readers AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE NO UNITY IN SEATTLE as far as I am concerned. African Americans have ZERO mom and pops stores in the Central Area or Rainier Valley. ZERO folks!! Also African Americans have ZERO malls full of businesses like the picture here of a mall on Rainier Ave South here in Seattle FULL OF BUSINESSES RAN BY CITIZENS OF KENYA!!

I ask you readers how come we do not a mall full of businesses ran by African Americans? NOT ONE!! The Asian American community and now East Africans HAVE MALL AFTER MALL AFTER MALL AFTER MALL of businesses. AFRICAN AMERICANS A GRAND TOTAL OF ZERO!! Asians run Viet Wah grocery stores and of course have a community in the INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT/CHINATOWN FULL OF BUSINESSES RAN BY ASIAN-AMERICANS!!

I listened online to the MLK Jr. event at Garfield High here in Seattle. I did NOT hear speakers telling us or asking us African Americans to be small businesses owners like other races. What I did hear is the same ole same ole blaming the white man for our condition.

This is BS!! Truth be told my worse enemies as a business man HAS BEEN MY AFRICAN AMERICAN PEOPLE!! Real talk ladies and gentlemen Uwajimaya-Pics_Outside-Store-Front_IMG_0812real talk for sure. Blaming Trump for everything. Can we blame Trump for African Americans not opening up MALL AFTER MALL of Asian and now East African businesses? HELL NO!! Can we blame Trump for many young poeple buying $5,000 rims to put on a 1989 Monte Carlo?

Buying rims instead of pooling our money like the Asians and East Africans and having a meeting at someone residence to discuss opening up a new business. This is what African Americans as a whole in Seattle like to do. Buy a new car etc instead of opening a new business.

Asians and East Africans have total unity. They do not wait until a special day to unite. Truth be told I have a story to tell but NO AFRICAN AMERICAN has asked me to speak on MLK Jr. Day. I had and still have a dream. I wanted to be a broadcaster when I was a teenager and I worked my ass off to have a name all over the music industry. I have TWO PROGRAMS that air 24-7 all over the west coast and stream online. Now I am trying to blow up my NBA webcast “Sports Inner City/Off The Court”

Hopefully I will obtain a badly needed Angel Investor or major sponsor. I say a prayer everyday. I don’t wait until MLK Jr. to try to act African American for a day and then the next day back to the same. That ain’t me. I can go on and on about the fake MLK Jr. Day here in Seattle.

Where are these so called leaders who show up at MLK Jr. Day every year when ANOTHER young brotha or sista is shot and killed in the streets of Seattle? WHERE IS THE DAMN OUTRAGE??? I don’t see it!! But let a white officer shoot a black person we are outraged. Give me a break readers. This upsets me big time.

So in ending, why do African Americans march on MLK Jr. Day in Seattle? Sorry to say to me it is a joke and total waste of time. I am sure many of you will not agree. That’s ok. I am a big boy.

Music Inner City TV Bio: TV One & Radio One Founder Cathy Hughes

“Music Inner City TV” Bio: Cathy Hughes

cathy-hughesCathy Hughes is a African American entrepreneur, radio and TV personality and business executive. Hughes founded the media company called Radio One and started TV One.

The company went public in 1998, making Cathy the first and only African American woman to head a publicity traded corporation at the time. She is for sure a trailblazer who has helped put African American owned media on the map.

In the 70′s, Hughes created the urban radio format called “The Quiet Storm” on Howard University’s radio station WHUR, with it’s very first DJ she decided on the late Melvin Lindsey. Before radio, Hughes worked for a African American newspaper called “The Omaha Star” Hughes started her career in 1969 at KOWH in Omaha, but then left for job in Washington D.C.

In 1973, Hughes became the General Sales Manager of Howard University’s radio station WHUR-FM and helped to increase station revenue from $250,000 to $3 million in it’s first year!!

Soon in 1975, Cathy became the first woman Vice President and GM of a station in the nation’s capital. In 1980, Hughes founded Radio One, and with former husband Dewey Hughes, bought  WOL-AM 1450 in D.C. After the previous employees had destroyed the facility, she faced financial problems and soon lost her home and moved with her young son to live at the station.

Cathy Hughes fortunes started to change when revamped the r&b station to a 24-7 talk radio format with the theme “Information Is Power” Hughes served as the stations morning show host for 11 years. WOL is still the most listed to talk radio station in D.C.

Radio One went on to own 70 radio stations in nine major markets in the U.S.  As of 2007, Hughes son Alfred Liggins serves as CEO and president of Radio One and Hughes as chairperson.

In January 2004, Cathy started TV One, a national cable and satellite TV network which bills itself as the “lifestyle and entertainment network for African American adults”. Both Cathy and her son have been named Entrepreneur of the Year by the company Ernst & Young. In 2015, a local business organization unofficially named the corner of 4th Street and H Street NE in Washington D.C. “Cathy Hughes Corner”

I have a lot of respect for Cathy Hughes. She is a strong lady in a man dominated field. She is bringing to the table something that is needed in media and that is diversity. Diversity is badly needed in radio and tv. For instance here in Seattle, there is ONE African American true news reporter in our area in Essix Porter on KIRO-TV. On radio in a market where Ms. Hughes does not have a station, there is barely a regular African American voice on radio.

One of my favorite programs is a program called “Unsung” on TV One. I never miss it. “Unsung” and “Shark Tank” (not on TV One) are my favorite programs on TV. So I hope Ms Hughes and TV One would open a new radio station here in Seattle with a strong signal. That would be great.  I hope you will support TV One and Radio One. A TRUE African American owned and operated media company.

Does Kanye West Really Need Therapy?

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

Ladies aKanye-West-2016nd gentlemen it is time I do a story on the very talented but confused Kanye West here on “Music Inner City News Magazine”.

I try not to bash African Americans on my sites but in this case I have to get it in. Not bashing West just giving my views.

Guess people really started to wonder what is really going on with West when he jumped on stage and surprised everyone including Taylor Swift a few years ago and took the microphone and said Beyonce should have won a award and not Taylor. That was just flat out wrong for Kanye to do that to Taylor. Ever since then I have grown to like Swift. Not really her music, just how she handled that event.

Since then West has continued to say and do things that make me and others wonder what is wrong with this dude. It is obvious something is wrong mentally with Kanye. It just is. So a question has to be asked. Does Kanye West need a doctor. Does he need therapy? I say yes.

Is it a mental problem or is it a emotional problem or is it a financial problem with him? For goodness sake, he has came out and said Bill Cosby is innocent. He has said he is the best artist in music history. He blasts his ex lady Amber Rose and so on. For sure West is a rapper who is one of if not the best rapper in the history of hip-hop/rap music. This is for sure.

But something is very wrong with the brotha. Recently he tweeted he is $53 million in personal debt. He went on to say…are you ready for this ladies and gentlemen, that instead of opening a school in Africa, “fellow rich people should support him!! He was directing this to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg who West begged him to give him $1 BILLION!! SAY WHAT????

He also said he would take support from Google co-founder Larry Page or from other Sillicon Valley rich folks. This shows that Kanye has a very serious problem. Or is it just a act for publicity? I think he needs therapy. And needs it now. This is my opinion.

He is a father of two little kids with Kim Kardashian. He should get the help now before his children realize something is wrong with daddy. Do it before it is to late. I just mentioned only a few of his outburts over the years. On social media and in interviews. He will go off like a fire cracker at any time during a interview. The person doing the interview has to be ready for anything when they deal with West.

Rap artist Rhymefest who has worked with Kanye a lot of songs has recently pulled away from working with him. He said “my brother needs help, in the form of counseling. Spiritual & mental. He should step away from the public and heal”. Real talk!!

I agree with Rhymefest. West should get help now. Hell recently he went off on Taylor Swift AGAIN saying “Hell I made the bitch” WHY would he say that about Taylor? What in the hell has Taylor Swift done to him? Is West a HATER against Swift because she has obtained hella Grammys and American Music Awards etc? I say yes!! He is a hater against West. That is stupid and crazy.

So in ending, I am tired of Kanye West going off on people. Some say he has not got over the passing of his mom who died a few years ago during a simple breast procedure. He and his mom were very very tight. But what ever the reason is, I join others who are starting to say it is not publicity when it comes to West and his outburst. This very talented fella should check himself in and get badly needed therapy immediately.

Where Is The Local Artist Airplay On KUBE93?

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

ericpowersToday I as write this Seattle radio station is holding it’s KUBE93 Summer Jam at the Gorge in Eastern Washington state. And again led by program director Eric Powers, they have blocked “Music Inner City TV” from covering the event.

Now check this out readers. We can cover many Hollywood events including a big golf event on Monday with a big red carpet and stars BUT Eric Powers has blocked us from covering the Summer Jam for about six years in a row. It is a outrage. It is wrong. And yes it is racism. Powers did buy me a nice sound system for my PC after I had a terrible fire in 2005. And I was and still am grateful for that.

But if you know me I have to stand up for my power106protestfolks. And truth be told KUBE93 is not playing local artists during primetime. That is between 3pm and 8pm. The only time KUBE93 plays local artist music is on Sunday night’s “Sound Sessions” at 11pm. That is when the least amount of people are listening to the radio!! Come on readers this is a damn shame!!

You know what readers? Cats in Los Angeles and the Bay Area got together and protested big time against Power 106 in L.A. (pic here in this article of the L.A. Power 106 protest) To say the program director PLAY LOCAL ARTISTS MUSIC!! And guess what? Now Power 106 and also KMEL in the Bay is playing local artists music during PRIMETIME!! Unlike KUBE93. And they will not until cats STAND UP AND PROTEST!! Make your voices heard!

Listen artists. If you plan out being somebody in the music game you have to get local radio stations like KUBE93 to play your music. If you just want to be what I call a “ghetto celebrity” then continue doing what you are doing.

Finally at the Summer Jam, AGAIN KUBE93 stuck local artists at SECONDARY stage to perform instead of performing on the MAIN STAGE AND THIS IS JUST PLAIN WRONG!! This local label Lane Records sponsored the secondary stage this year at KUBE’s Summer Jam. And they had to spend a pretty penny for that. ALL THE ARTIST THAT PLAYED OR WILL PLAY THE SECONDARY STAGE IS GETTING ZERO RADIO AIRPLAY DURING PRIMETIME ON KUBE93!!! WHAT IS UP WITH THAT??

The other day there was a so called “networking” event here in Seattle. Was standing up for local airplay on KUBE and other local stations Movin 92.5 and a new station 103.7 discussed? HELL NO! It is time for cats to get their head out of the Northwest clouds!! STAND UP AND BE COUNTED AND MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!! Don’t be happy for where you are at. It is time for folks to STOP GIVING MONEY TO KUBE93 because when you do that they are running all the way to the damn bank OFF THE BACKS OF AFRICAN AMERICANS!! When a station that has NEVER had a AFRICAN AMERICAN DJ DURING PRIMETIME, something is VERY WRONG!!

I am not finished with this topic so turned readers.

Music Inner City News Magazine Bio: Prince

Prince Performs “Munity” on Arsenio Hall Show (Click here)

BET Awards '06 - ShowI have had conversations recently about the state of urban music today with a few friends and it was very interesting to hear other people’s opinion on the state of urban music today. I have my strong opinions.

Then I turn on “The Arsenio Hall Show” and saw a performer who has stood the test of time and marches to his own beat and for years has made his own style and does his own thing in the tough music business and his name is Prince. Prince has his own built in fans who follow him and his music for years and years since he arrived on the music scene in the late 80′s. He is one of a kind.

Prince is not a fan of the internet and that is a fact. He feels people are downloading music and many times artists are not getting paid what they should be paid. He made that point on Arsenio’s program. Fans of Prince know he really does not do to many interviews so it was great to see and hear the Purple One be a guest on Hall’s program and answer questions. He even answered questions from the audience.

The song “Munity” is pure FUNK!! Real music. The way music was back in the day. A song that makes you want to dance. A great tune. Classic Prince for sure. Young artist need to learn from a artist like Prince. He is a GREAT artist and a GREAT entertainer!! The one and only…Prince!

WHY Did SI Come Out With Story The Day Of Super Bowl Press Day?

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

Here in my hometown of Seattle, Washington certain so called sports jocks on sports radio are letting their feeling known on Baltimore Ravens future Hall of Fame member Ray Lewis. And it is getting worse by the day. And in my opinion unfair!!

Of course certain clowns like KJR’s Ian Furness and fellow clown Jason Puckett are blasting Lewis and bringing up the 1999 case in which two people were murdered in Atlanta. The murders are unsolved. Some think Lewis was a part of it & he knows what happened and who killed who. But Lewis has “tried” to move on from the case but this situation will follow Lewis until he dies.

Furness and others in sports media get behind the microphone and just down right say “I don’t like the guy” And they are tired of “his act” and are tired of his “preaching and dancing”. Which in my opinion is borderline racism. Today I heard a former NFL player say he is tired of Lewis and his “act” and cannot wait until his last game is over. Ian agreed with him. Those comments were BS!!!!

Myself, I am not tired of Lewis dancing and his so called “preaching”. Ray Lewis since the case in 1999 has tried to be a first class role model for kids. His record is clean for the last 13 years. He goes to community centers and schools and he talks to the kids about staying in school and etc. He has tried to be a first class role model for milllions of kids all over the world who loves his play off the field and on the field.

But the now the media is jumping on a SI story that Lewis may have used a deer spray that might have helped him recover from a serious injury he had during the season. This deer spray is banned by the NFL. Lewis has said the story is not true. So readers what side are you on? I want to know WHY SI came out with this stuff about Lewis ON THE SAME DAY AS MEDIA DAY FOR THE SUPER BOWL???? WHY? Was this planned by SI to make Lewis look bad because he is riding on such a high in helping his team reach the Super Bowl? I say YES!!

So now Lewis is fighting the 1999 murder case and the deer spray story instead of discussing the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl vs the 49ers. This is crazy!! Real crazy.

But certains fools like Ian Furness and Randy Cross and others do not like Ray Lewis as a person. They can care less about his Hall of Fame play for 17 years on the field. They want Lewis to suffer. They want to make Lewis look bad just like they wanted Mick Vick and OJ to look bad.

I think Ray Lewis is the best linebacker of his day. And one of best of all time in the NFL. When I watch the Super Bowl I want to see Lewis win and go out into retirement a winner. And I want to see him do his dance at the start of the game for the last time. And I want to hear what he wants to say after the game too.

Others want to say he is “preaching”. I call it putting down knowledge. This is what I call it. I hope sports radio will get off the 1999 case and this deer spray SET UP by SI and disgame in which one of the best NFL players of all time will play his last game.  Hopefully one day the real truth will come out about really happened that day in Atlanta. For everyones sake including the family of the deceased!

Is SI trying to sell magazines with this Lewis story put out on press day at the Super Bowl? HELL YESSSSS!!!!

Music Inner City News Magazine Bio: T.I.

ARTICLE/BIO from wikipedia.com click here

Lately I noticed a lot of positive press on Clifford Harris aka T.I. and this is a good thing. Because for awhile it was nothing but negative when it came to the rapper, actor and business owner.

He has got a pretty long rap sheet when it comes to breaking the law but it seems he has learned his lesson after his last visit to the pen. He is trying to be a great father to his kids and a role model for other kids and is trying to make his company Grand Hustle  something to deal with in music, tv and in Hollywood.

T.I. (pic with our own Seattle Mariner hat on) has shown on his reality show on TV with his wive Tiny that he does not want to be a father his kids do not know. He  is a caring dad to his kids and it seems he has a great relationship with Tiny who he has been with a long time.

With a lot of hip-hop these days sounding the same, when you hear a joint by T.I. you know it is T.I. He is one of my favorite hip-hop artists for sure. He has a new cd coming out soon and like the rest of his past cd’s it will sell big time because T.I. knows how to put out hits. That’s for sure. And he is a good actor too unlike many other rappers who try to act in Hollywood. He can really act. If you have seen his acting you will agree.

And it seems he is doing a lot in the community with toy giveaways at Xmas and turkey giveaways at Thanksgiving and he recently said he would not let a daughter of his date Chris Brown if they were old enough to date Brezzy. We all know what Brown did to Rihanna. That was a great statement.

So a big shout out to T.I. for getting his stuff together on the behalf of his family and fans. The future looks good for him in music and in Hollywood.    Gordon Curvey

I Saw Trouble Signs From The Start: Chad & Gold-Digger Evelyn

ARTICLE FROM nydailynews.com (Click here for full story)

I don’t know about you but I saw this happening a long time ago. I KNEW this so called relationship between reality tv motor-mouth Evelyn Lozada and NFL player Chad Johnson was not going to last ONE YEAR!! Man was I right. Johnson gets charged with “headbutting” Lozada. Yeah right! If you think that happned I have a bridge I want to sell in China.

Do not think this really happened readers. It is a bunch a BS! First of all, Evelyn is a loud mouth so called lady. All you have to do is watch “Basketball Wives” over and over. In the many many fights on the show she is the ring leader. Tossing fists, bottles, shoes and anything that moves.

When I first saw that Chad and Evelyn was a item I said no way! This cannot be real. It is not going to last. Lozada is a gold digger and Johnson was a high paid NFL star. He should have stayed away from her. I guess he fell for the sex right? Here is what is going to happened to Chad in my opinion. He will be broke soon. The Jets just cut him. Did he save his cash? No way. Dude was buying Bentley’s and Bugutti’s etc.

So let’s see what is going to happen to Chad Johnson. It will be very interesting to see. He made a serious mistake in hooking up with Evelyn. Is this all a set up for another reality show “Chad and Evelyn”? We will see.   Gordon Curvey

The Reason I Started “M.I.C-TV” Don Cornelius Has Died

Listen to the latest edition of “Music Inner City Radio” podcast below hosted by Gordon Curvey and based in Seattle, Washington (U.S.) 24-7 on-demand!!

ARTICLE FROM thegrio.com (full story click here)

I am shocked and saddened today because the person who inspired me to start a TV program named “Music Inner City TV” more than twenty one years ago, Don Cornelius has died at age 75 of a possible suicide.

Word is Cornelius was very sick maybe with cancer. He has not looked to well in recent years. At the BET Awards a few years ago Don had trouble reading the teleprompter to announce the next performer in a tribute to the legendary O’Jays.

As a kid I stood in front of my mirror with a pencil in my hand trying to be like Don Cornelius hosting “Soul Train” He is the main reason I came up with the idea of “Music Inner City TV” in 1990 here in Seattle. And here it is 21 years later I am still producing the show. But it is all because of the legendary Don Cornelius.

And I had a chance to tell Don that he was my “idol” a few years ago at a event in L.A. That was a thrill to tell him in his face that I started my TV show because of him.  God willing “M.I.C-TV” will be around as long as “Soul Train”

Thanks Don for what you did for me and for r&b music. When the word legend is used it for sure is used when we discuss……Don Cornelius.  Rest in peace my brotha.    Gordon Curvey

President Obama Sings Al Green’s “Let Stay Together” @ The Apollo

ARTICLE FROM eurweb.com (Full story click here)

President Barack Obama flew into the Big Apple for a fundraiser after a trip to Disney World In Florida for a major announcement. This is 2012 the year of the big election for his current job so he is hitting the road to talk to the people.

He is letting the people know that his job will take longer than one term. And he asking his supporters to support him in the elections so he can finish his job that he started. He has a hard job in front of him but but we here at “Music Inner City” is a supporter of the President.

Yes things are rough. Companies like Clear Channel are cutting back big time but slowly but surely things are getting better. He needs another term to help get people back to work.

I watched the CNN Debate on TV from South Carolina and it was a outrage what the candidates was saying about the President of United States. Romney said the President is “dangerous” Readers how can President Obama be “dangerous” when under the Prez, the most dangerous man in the world Bin Liden was caught and killed. A man who killed more than 3,000 folks in 9-11. How can Romney say the President is “dangerous” I do not understand this AT ALL.

The other candidates also blasted the President at will. Remember one of them called President Obama “a food stamp President” What kind of insane comment is that? It has to stop.

While in New York he went to a fundraiser at the home of filmmaker Spike Lee that brought in a lot of money and then he went to the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem to speak. In the crowd was another legend. Former guest on Seattle’s “Music Inner City TV” Rev. Al Green.

President Obama noticed Rev. Green was in the audience so he said a few things about Rev. Green and then sang a few words from a Green hit “Let’s Stay Together” and the crowd went crazy. President Obama can hold a tune folks. Click the link above to see the Prez at the Apollo. Gordon Curvey

Melissa Harris-Perry Gets Her Own Program On MSNBC

Listen to the latest edition of “Music Inner City Radio” podcast hosted by Gordon Curvey. Produced 1-11-2012. Mixing music and urban sports plus exclusive interviews.

ARTICLE FROM mediaite.com (Full story click here)

Found out some great information today that I did not know but when I found out I was so happy! Professor Melissa Harris-Perry was given her own program on MSNBC starting Sunday Feb 4th.

The program which is not named right now will air at 7am Seattle time. Perry has done very well as a sub for other hosts on MSNBC. The ratings was good and the management at MSNBC decided hey let’s give her a program. This is great. Even though it is early on Sunday, I will be watching. Of course we can always go online to view a webcast of her show on-demand.

A HUGE shout-out needs to go out to the management of MSNBC for allowing African Americans in Rev Al Sharpton and now Proffessor Perry to have their own programs. It gives the nation views and opinions that was not heard before on broadcast and cable TV except for the Rev Jesse Jackson for a short time a few years ago. The program was not on the air very long.

Here is a question. What is CNN waiting for? They are not opening the doors to African Americans to have a program and instead gives a program to Erin Burnett with her show “Outfront”. It is time for CNN to offer a program to say Roland Martin or someone else.

The word is called diversity. MSNBC knows about this word. They also have Tamara Hall hosting news everyday too. Of course you see I am not even talking about Fox News. Why? Because it just ain’t going to happen on Fox News. Real talk. Not in my lifetime.

So a big shout out again goes out to the management of MSNBC for allowing Tamara Hall, Rev. Sharpton and now Professor Perry to host and have their own programs. It makes me very happy!!  Gordon Curvey

Music Inner City Bio: Rihanna

FULL BIO click here

If you are a music fan you have to realize that Rihanna is a very talented and beautiful young lady. She has created her own style and image unlike many other young singers.

Some think she has gone over the line in some of her actions on stage during her concerts but most do not think that way because when you go to one of her concerts one thing for sure you will be entertained.

Yes the the situation with Chris Brown was not good. It was terrible. I was in Los Angeles with Twin Tammy J for the Clive Davis Awards and Grammy Awards when the incident took place.

Everyone wondered why Brezzy(Chris Brown) came to the Davis event by himself and did not talk to anyone on the red carpet. And then everyone’s phones blew up about the problem of Rihanna getting beat up. It was CRAZY!

I just hope Rihanna finds a good man one day. But she is still young so I hope she takes her time and just concentrate on her career.

I hope she has a lot of role models she can look up to besides her parents for advice. I know she is tight with Jay Z. She has a long career ahead of her and wish her the best. Beyonce, Lady GaGa and Rihanna are three ladies who sing and entertain us too. Again, the future is BIG for Rihanna.     Gordon Curvey

NBA Players Reject Owners Deal So Will We See A NBA Season?

ARTICLE FROM nba.com (Full story click here)

I was thinking positive regarding today would be a good day as far as ending the NBA lockout but I was wrong big time because the NBA players rejected the owners deal.

The owners led by David Stern had a deal on the table that would have started the season on December 15th and the season would be a 72 game season instead of 82. But that ain’t going to happen.

The way it looks now readers NBA fans will have to look at old games from the 70′s and 80′s and 90′s on NBA-TV instead of watching KD, KG and Kobe. This is truly truly sad.

I am on the players side big time. The players make the NBA so the owners can bank BIG dollars. Fans pack NBA arenas to see D-Wade, LeBron, Dirk, Seattle’s own Jamal Crawford and Jason Terry and others play but it looks like we will not watch NBA games for awhile.

If you listened to Stern today, the owners will not back down and he blasted Billy Hunter who works for the players. He sounded very arrount and uppity. Like what Bryant Gumbel and another person said about Stern that he acts like a “platation owner and the players are his slaves” This is outrage!! Remember the NBA players are majority African American or a person of color and the owners are 99% white. Micheal Jordan is the only black owner.

Being in Seattle, I cannot watch live NBA basketball anymore so I hav to watch on TV or go to Portland or watch a game their games are always sold out. I have to watch the games on NBA-TV or TNT or ESPN. I just want to see the season start. That’s all I want as a sports fan.   Gordon Curvey

New Business By 50 Cent To Help Feed Poor Children

“MUSIC INNER CITY RADIO” podcast. A special broadcast with some of the music by the late 2Pac. This program is 24/7 on-demand. A spinoff of “M.I.C Radio” here in Seattle on Alternative Talk 1150am KKNW every Friday a little after 10pm Seattle time/Click here to listen to this program

ARTICLE FROM atlantapost.com (Full story click here)

I don’t care if 50 Cent aka Curtis Jackson is from the East Coast. I am writing about a dude who is not just about grabbing the mic and rapping in city to city and buying big cars and more. 50 is about making money and also giving back.

He is starting a new energy drink called “Street King” and every time someone buys the new drink, it will help a poor kid have a meal in Africa and elsewhere. This is a great move by 50.

Read the article and you will learn more what he has done to give back. To many times we read about rappers like T.I. or Shyne or DMX and The Game getting in trouble.

Might of face The Game is in the news for maybe calling 50 gay in a tweet recently. And that 50 may be gay like a lot of rappers but not admitting it. Just ANOTHER beef started by The Game in his years of problems with 50. When in the hell is it going to stop?

Of course 50 made about 200 milion dollars when he sold his investment in Vitimin Water. And other business ventures has lined the pockets of 50. Plus he makes a lot of cheese making movies in Hollywood.

But this news business he is starting is great on the part of 50. Selling energy drinks and feeding children. The majority media needs to talk more about this. BUT as many of us know the majority media wants to talk negative instead of positive when it comes to hip-hop and rap artists. Sometimes they do good things!   Gordon Curvey

Hey James Haters Sorry! It Is The Heat and Mavs In The NBA Finals

ARTICLE FROM miamiherald.com (Full story click here)

For all you LeBron haters out their I feel sorry for you. Because his Miami Heat are in the NBA Finals going up against Big Dirk, Seattle’s own Jason Terry and the Dallas Mavericks.

This is what James wanted when he joined forces with D-Wade and Chis Bosh on the Heat. A chance to win a lot of NBA titles. Well in year one of the Big Three they will get their chance.

It is time to face reality. LeBron James is a GREAT player. At 25 he still can get better and better. Can you imagine that sports fans? James getting better? It is going to happen.

Cleveland Cavs fans have to feel terrible to see James in the finals. I know sports radio in Cleveland is buzzing with James haters. You that is the case.

Anyway it will be a real interesting NBA Finals. Who on the Heat will watch Big Dirk? This cat is on FIRE!! He is a 7 footer with a fall away jumper and other types of shots. Do not be surprised to see James watching him.

LeBron can play all five positions on the court. No other NBA player can do that. He is just a great player so all the haters against him need to stop and realize how great of a player he is.

Of course I want to see Seattle native Jason Terry win a ring. So I hope the Dallas Mavs win the NBA title. It will be a great series.   Gordon Curvey.

Hannity/Fox Put Common On Blast!!

ARTICLE FROM hollywoodreporter.com (Click here for full story)

Guess you have heard former guest on Seattle’s own “Music Inner City TV” is being blasted for performing at the White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

He is being blasted along with the President by Sean Hannity and the right wing for a song he made about a cop killer years ago. But Hannity and the right wing have NOT done their homework on the artist Common.

This brotha has done a tremendous amount of work in the inner city trying to reach young kids about positive things. For instance I recently interviewed Common here in Seattle when he was on tour with MTV going ALL OVER THE COUNTRY going to schools talking to the youth about the importance of a good education.

But Hannity and the right wing knows NOTHING about this nor do they care only care about reaching deep to criticize President Obama about ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING!!!

Common is the last hip-hop artists to be blast on Fox News. You want to know why readers? Because Common was a guest on Fox News in the past and was praised by the host for his POSITIVE LYRICS!! But all of a sudden because he is performing for the President and First Lady at the White House he is a “gangsta rapper” and a terrible dude by Hannity and other right wingers. WHAT A JOKE!!

Bottom line is President Obama ratings have jumped up since the killing of Bin Laden and Sean Hannity and Fox News and Sarah Palin and others on the right wing are fishing trying to put the President on blast because the elections in 2012 and as of right now, no one on the right can beat the President. This is the bottom line.

Yes we have high gas prices and high unemployment etc but the President and his administation is doing the best they can. Yes I disagree with things the President has done. But that can be said about a lot of Presidents. One thing for sure Hannity and the right wing have reached way low in blasting Common performing at the White House. Way low. Gordon Curvey

Seattle Mariners Correct In Cutting Milton Bradley

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

In the sports scene here in Seattle, the Seattle Mariners cut outfielder Milton Bradley from the team and I think it was the right move for the team to do.

Bradley was just not producing. He is getting paid $12 million and is hitting .213. I am sorry that is not cutting it. I am tired of seeing cats getting paid millions and not producing when I am out here trying to pay my bills, put gas in my car and food on my table.

Truth be told Milton Bradley has some problems. Yes I know the fans were getting on his case on the road and at home but why where ear plugs? I have never seen a baseball player do that. Never. Most likely fans were calling him the “n” word. But to wear earplugs?

Now I am on Bradley’s side when it comes to not doing interviews with local sports radio stations KJR and 710 ESPN. Because he and Mariner player Chone Figgins are the sports radio hosts and callers favorite “whipping boy”

KJR host Dave Mahler even called Figgins “a common criminal” over the air a few weeks ago over the air because he was mad that Figgins did not answer KJR reporters questions after a loss.

KJR management has covered up Mahler’s comments. I went to KJR to ask for a copy of Mahler’s problem and management told me “it was not recorded” Which is a flat out LIE! I have not given up on Mahler and his comment because the NAACP is upset at Mahler’s comment regarding Figgins.

Will I listen to KJR and 710 ESPN about the cutting of Bradley? Hell no!! Because I know they will be blasting Bradley and it will go over the line.

What I am saying here is that the cutting of Milton Bradley from the Seattle Mariners was the correct move for the team. I am glad another brotha Mike Wilson came up from the minors. Why am I glad?

Because I want to see more African American young kids playing baseball. So when local Seattle area kids in the inner city see a Chone Figgins or a Mike Wilson playing for the Mariners that look like they are, they might want to try playing baseball along with football and basketball.

Seattle Writer Good Story On How Basketball Brings Races Together

ARTICLE FROM seattletimes.com (Full story click here)

I have give credit where credit is due. Seattle sports writer Steve Kelly wrote a good story in the Seattle Times (click the link to read) about how basketball helped him and how he realizes how basketball brings black faces and white faces together.

And it is true. No other major sport has the personalities basketball has so in my opinion and Kelly’s it brings us more together as a people.

For instance I went to a game right before the NBA season started at Seattle’s Garfield High School put on by Seattle native and Portland guard Brandon Roy. At the game you saw Asians, East Africans, African Americans and whites in the audience having a good time watching the game of basketball.

I am sorry to say, when you go to a major league baseball game at Safeco Field here in town, the only people of color you see are the ushers and the ones on the teams. It is a little better at NFL games but not much.

But if you look at the audience at a NBA game it is a rainbow of colors. Just like it is in America. It is that way at a high school game, college game and of course the NBA.

Kelly’s article was a great article. I just wish Steve Kelly would be bold enough to write a story in the Seattle Times regarding the radio station he has a show on every week. Sports radio KJR which does the COMPLETE OPPISITE of what his article is about.

The station has ZERO diversity. NONE. In sales, producers, on the air and in management. This does not reflect the fields and courts of America. In my opinion, yes basketball knows about the word DIVERSITY. It helps to bring people together. But Steve a sports radio station which you work for, does not know about the work DIVERSITY nor do they care.      Gordon Curvey

It is the Steelers vs. the Packers in the Super Bowl. I wanted the Jets and Green Bay but it was not meant to be. But it will be a good Super Bowl. To read more on the upcoming Super Bowl and more Click here. Story via sports.yahoo.com

Singer John Legend Gets Nomination For Critic’s Choice Award

ARTICLE FROM blackvoices.com (Full story click here)

A few weeks ago I was on my way back to my residence/office/studio here in Seattle and I passed by Franklin High School here in Seattle and saw a bunch of students standing outside waiting to get into the gym for a event.

I also saw a tour bus with MTV “Get Schooled” all over it. I quickly found out what the event was about. It was a tour with music and sports stars going all over the U.S. to schools talking to the youth about staying in school and to get a good education.

I was lucky enough to have my video camera in my car and MTV’s people made a call back to New York to verify I am a legit video program here in Seattle so I can cover the event for Music Inner City TV. MTV knew of my show and I was let in to cover the event and I got interviews with Common and MTV’s Sway.

One of stars who has used his name to speak out about the importance of a good education and staying in school is singer John Legend who has been nominated for this years Critic’s Choice Award for a song he wrote and song he produced call “Waiting For Superman”

Legend is doing his part to speak to the youth about having a good education all over the place including his concerts all over America. This is great on the part of entertainers like Legend, Common, Keri Hilson, sports star Shaquille O’Neal and others to say to the youth that a education is very very important.

As some of you may know, EVERY guest on “Music Inner City TV” over the twenty years I have done the program is asked to speak to the youth about staying in school, staying away from drugs and more. The youth is our future and they need to know how important a education is. Real talk folks.  Gordon Curvey

James Hits 38 In A Rout Against TERRIBLE Cleveland Cavs

ARTICLE FROM chron.com (Full story click here)

Sports fans what I saw tonight has me MAD as a guy who loves the sport of basketball. I was hyped up to watch LeBron James come back to Cleveland to play the Cavs. I was ready. I had my popcorn popped and was ready for a good game. Boy was I let down.

First of all I saw James come on the court smiling. But what really pissed me off was seeing a few of the Cavs players hugging James!! WHAT THE HELL!!! Why on earth would ANYONE on the Cavs want to hug LeBron after this cat left the Cavs last summer. When James left he was saying the Cavs team is not a team I can win a title with so I am cutting out of town.

James toyed with the pathetic Cavs. One time he hit a jumper from about twenty five feet right in front of the Cavs bench and he looked at a few of the Cavs smiling!! What the hell!!

The fans who yelled stuff at James had ZERO effect!!! NONE!!!! It was like a JV team playing against the varsity. Boys against men. I was real upset as a sports fan at the TOTAL lack of effect by the Cleveland Cavs in a game that should have been like their game seven. All Cavs fans should be real upset at the team and even head coach Byron Scott. They let their city down. And let me down as a basketball fan.

Again why would ANY Cavs player hug James before the game or after the game. That was terrible. If I was the owner of the Cavs I would be upset at his team. This kind of crap I saw tonight by the Cavs would NOT have happened back in the day when Rick Mahorn and his bad boy Detroit Pistons was playing.

James would have been laid out when he came into the lane for a dunk like he did tonight. The Cavs did not put a hand on LeBron!!!! What a joke!!! What a joke!!!   Gordon Curvey

Vikings Cut Randy Moss/The Question Is Why?

ARTICLE FROM nfl.com (Full story click here)

NFL player and future Hall Of Famer Randy Moss was released today by the Minnesota Vikings a day after the Vikings was beat by Randy’s former team New England.

Moss at the post game press conference for some reason praised his former team and the head coach and to me that might be a reason for his release but truth be told, something happened in the locker room or on the team plane that got Moss cut from the team.

Head Coach Brad Childress has the power to cut players and he did just that to Moss. But fans are wondering one thing……..why?

I am confused just like Viking fans are confused. I know Vikings players have to be confused and even angry at what happened to Randy Moss.

So now here is the question. Who will pick Moss up? Miami? What about here in my hometown of Seattle with the Seahawks? Our O line is not the best in the NFL but let’s see what happens. Rumor is the Seahawks have connected Randy’s people.

Or what about going back with New England? I guess we have to wait and see. We will report on it when Moss signs with another team right here on “Music Inner City News Magazine”    Gordon Curvey

Total Lack Of Diversity On Sports Radio Stations In Seattle

This is Part 2 of my series of stories regarding local sports radio stations in Seattle, Washington. Two stations who cover sports in Seattle, have a grand total of ZERO African Americans on the air on a regular basis. The stations are sports radio KJR and 710 ESPN.

KJR has been on the air for more than 19 years and 710 ESPN has been on the air for about two years in the Seattle/Tacoma radio market. Again, no African Americans have been on the air with his or hers own program during the time these stations have been on the air. This is wrong readers.

When African Americans and people of color dominate the three major sports (football, basketball and baseball) it is wrong in my strong opinion to have a completely all white staffs on the two local sports stations. I am TIRED of hearing white guys interviewing African Americans and people of color on the air who they cannot relate to what so ever!!!

ONLY my friend Rick Dupree has been on the air. But he was only a semi-regular. He was fired and RE-HIRED again only to leave KJR because he saw no hope for himself to have his own regular program. So he left.

The current on air staff on KJR is Mitch Levy, Dave “Softy” Mahler, Ian Furness and Elise Woodward with Dick Fain on the weekend. Recently a former host on KJR, Jeff Aaron was brought back to have his own program on the weekends.

Also recently, “Hot Shot” Scott was hired to be on the air on KJR with the “The Gasman” during the weekdays to replace the departed “The Groz”. Scott was a DJ on sister station KUBE93.

On 710 ESPN it is Mike Salk, Brock Huard, “The Groz” Dave Grosby and Kevin Calabro and Jim Moore on the air. All the hosts on 710 ESPN and KJR are white. But to make matters worse, as far as I know, their are no African Americans or people of color in sales, as producers and for sure in management. This is wrong.

Seattle is a city known for it’s diversity. But in sports radio here in Seattle, diversity is a no show. The question is why? Well the answer is called the “ole boy network” in radio,TV and radio plus newspapers where whites help other whites to obtain employment while African Americans and people of color are left on the sidelines.

As I said earlier, “Hot Shot” Scott and Jeff Aaron was recently hired on KJR. Both of whom had ties to KJR already with Scott as a dj on sister station KUBE93 and Aaron as a former employee with KJR. For sure, the “ole boy network” is the reason both of them were hired.

On 710 ESPN, Brock Huard had ZERO radio experience but was hired. Jim Moore is a newspaper man who worked for the P.I. which is no longer around. Mike Salk came from Boston. Kevin Calabro and “The Groz” Grosby I have no problem with. And I have no problem with Dick Fain and Elise Woodward on KJR. Others, I have a problem with.

Recently I sent KJR host Dave Malher a text after a recent Husky football game in which QB Jake Locker did not have a good game. Mahler had given me his number months earlier.

Mahler sent me a return text calling me a “asshole” and “a nut job psycho” “I am as crazy as I am stupid” other very negative names. One text Mahler sent had to be modified by my phone company and removed!! It was wrong for Mahler to call me these derogatory names.

What is going on in sports radio here in Seattle is a total lack of inclusion of African Americans and people of color on a regular basis on ESPN 710 and KJR. The problem is management at the two stations seem not to care about this problem.

The management at KJR flat out LIED to African American leadership about hiring and diversity. FLAT OUT LIED. It is time for a chance at KJR and 710 ESPN. The hosts don’t care, the producers don’t care, and for sure management does not care. But one thing for sure………I care!!!!!

Racism is alive and well because all you have to do is look at 710 ESPN and sportsradio KJR here in Seattle. Dave Mahler’s texts to me shows for sure that there is work to be done.

Local newspaper, The Seattle Times has a sports editor who refuses to allow his writers to do a story on what I am writing about here. Why? Because he has writers at the Times like Jerry Brewer (who is African American) and Steve Kelly that are “in bed” with KJR. They are on the air as guests on the station. And Jim Moore who writes for the Seattle PI website, also refuses to write about this because he is on the air on 710 ESPN.This is Part 2 of my series of stories regarding local sports radio stations in Seattle, Washington. Lack Of Diversity On Sports Radio In Seattle/Part 1

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

As I get ready to have a serious operation this week I have some thoughts I want to share regarding the sports radio situation here in Seattle, Washington (U.S.)

The two stations are 710 ESPN and KJR. 710 ESPN has been on the air for a year or so and KJR for 19 years in the Seattle/Tacoma area. For 19 years KJR has NEVER had a African American with his or hers own regular program. Currently their total workforce has a grand total of ZERO African Americans the last time I checked. That includes producers, over the air, sales and management.

I will talk about 710 ESPN in Part 2 of this story but I want to discuss KJR in Part 1. KJR constantly blasts African Americans and people of color in a negative way with out the other point of view from a African American or person of color. THIS IS UNFAIR!

Words like “THUG” is used by the all white staff of KJR against African Americans and people of color ONLY. The word “THUG” is a code word for the “N” word. It is used by callers and hosts. This word is NEVER used against whites in the sports world. NEVER.

KJR management just hired two more whites to be on the air, Jeff Aaron and Hot Shot Scott. Scott worked at sister station KUBE93 and Aaron used to a sports jock on KJR. Was fired or laid off and now he is back.

It is like the management of KJR do not care about diversity over the air. Or having a African American with his or hers own program. Stephen A. Smith (a African American) is on KJR at 3am but it is not a local show. It is a Fox national program.

A few years ago, their was a meeting held with African American community leaders and KJR management in which PROMISES WERE MADE BY KJR MANAGEMENT. Promises that included working on diversity in hiring and over the air. Promises where made to myself and other community folks like former Seattle NAACP chairman Carl Mack.

But then Mack left town and KJR backed off the promises that was made. In other words, KJR management LIED TO ME AND CARL MACK AND OTHERS. This is wrong. KJR management has shown with the hiring of Scott and Aaron that they DO NOT care about having a African American over the air on KJR. Period.

KJR is like a frat club or Elk’s Club in Vermont or South Dakota. No blacks in sight. They are friends and buddies instead of workmates. They call and text each other after work etc. Even the bumper music is all white most of the time. Bumper music is a term for the music played in the background after a commercial etc. No T.I. or Drake or Jay Z or Kanye West or Lil Wayne or Rihanna or classic soul like Stevie Wonder or The Isley Bros etc. Instead it is Aerosmith or ZZ Top and The Little River Band etc or even on Mitch Levy’s show, Frank Sinatra etc.

Issues of race comes up all the time on KJR and the all white staff CANNOT RELATE. They do not have a clue on the topic. Also it hurts me hearing the KJR jocks constantly interviewing African Americans THEY CANNOT RELATE TO what so ever. These cats are from the inner city or deep south etc. Hearing Mitch Levy and Dave Mahler and Ian Furness and now Aaron interviewing these inner city cats turns my stomach!!

The only jocks I like on KJR is Dick Fain and Elise Woodward. Yes they are white, but Woodward played basketball and has dealt with African Americans and people of color and Fain coaches at Mt. Rainier High School and deals with inner city cats all the time.

This is Part 1 of “Lack Of Diversity On Sports Radio” Part 2 I will deal with local sports writers who are “in bed” with sports radio, Mitch Levy’s “Bigger Dance” contest and discuss 710 ESPN and more.

Please watch “Music Inner City TV” Ustream programs live and on-demand. We will feature music videos and discuss issues in entertainment, urban sports and soon we will have contests to give away cd’s etc.

Just click the Ustream links above.

KUBE93 Needs To Play Local Artists During PRIME TIME!

ARTICLE FROM blogs.myspace.com Full story click here)

“One’s Man Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

(Thanks for everyone’s support during my health problems!)

I came upon the above article on the net yesterday and even though it was from 1997, every thing in the article is happening TODAY!! And yours truly is even mentioned. To my surprise!!

The article is by a cat who is not afraid TO SPEAK UP AND TAKE STANDS, just like me. It is a cat named Davy D out of the Bay Area. Just like my homie former Seattle NAACP chairman Carl Mack. Not afraid to speak up.

The above article is about Seattle’s KUBE 93 and their stance of not playing local artists during prim time. Let Usher or Drake or Lil Wayne or Ray J break out with a new joint, KUBE is all over it. But let Mac Slug or Chocolate or Twin G or Tacoma’s own Bassrock come out with a new joint and it is nowhere to be found on KUBE’s playlist.

KUBE 93 has been playing national artists on KUBE 93 without giving PRIME TIME air spins for local artists unless you are Seattle’s own Sir Mix-A-Lot and a few others.

It is time for local urban artists to stand up and take a stand just like artists did against Power 106 in L.A. and KMEL in the Bay. They said enough is enough and HIT THE STREETS with pickets and a march. THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN HERE IN SEATTLE. The question ……….will it happen. I think no.

I think local artist are scared to take a stand. Afriad of their rep, afraid to take a risk. To laid back. Cats in Los Angeles and San Fran were not afraid. So now San Quinn and Mac Mall and L.A. artist can get their stuff played at 5pm and 6pm and 7pm.   hours instead of 11pm or midnight or not at all.

Local Seattle area artists the ball is in your court. Will you shoot and sink a 15 footer or shoot a brick. We will see. Again read my homies Davy D article. It is 2010 not 1997 but nothing has changed.

KUBE gave me real nice sound system for my computer after my terrible fire in 2005 for which I was very happy!!! But then they continued to ban me from the SJ etc.

The above article says that the FCC has told Clear Ch. owned stations and other stations to SET ASIDE 8,500 HOURS FOR LOCAL ARTISTS AIR SPINS DURING PRIM TIME!!. Let me repeat, the FCC has set told Clear Ch stations to SET ASIDE 8,500 HOURS for local artists air spin during prime time.

This WILL NOT happen if local Seattle/Tacoma artists continue to sit on their ass. and not march down to the radio meetings that KUBE 93 has EVERY WEEK and demand they will play the LOCAL artists hot new joint during PRIME TIME!! do not TAKE A TERRIBLE JOINT DOWN THEIR.

As you local artist lay in the cut and do nothing then you will not have airspins on KUBE. If you want to continue to be ghetto celebrities to catch the honeys then keep doing what you are doing as local artists.

In 1994 and 1998 myself, Curtis “Boss” Elerson, Gene Dexter, Silver Shadow D., Wojack, Robert Redwine, Melvin Hart and a few others brought out the pickets in front of KUBE 93′s offices. We meant business!!!! We had thousands of stickers and a bunch of pickets. We stayed up until 3am making picketts etc.

A LOT OF YOU YOUNG CATS DON’T KNOW THIS HAPPENED BUT IT DID. It is time for a new generation to do what we OG’s did in 94′ and 98′. You have to DEMAND THAT KUBE PLAYS YOUR JOINTS DURING PRIME TIME!! A FCC law will back you up because I am sure those 8,500 hours have not been taken up. REMEMBER THIS IS A LAW ARTISTS. DEMAND THAT KUBE PLAY YOUR HOT JOINTS!!

Organize yourself and speak out. Do you want to be seen on maybe 106? Remember ONLY SIR A-LOT IS THE CAT WHO HAS BLOWN UP BIG FROM SEATTLE. This is flat out sad. He has not had a hit since 1991 with “Baby Got Back” This is 2010!!! It is time for the Seattle/Tacoma area to be put back on the hip-hop/r&b/rap map!!!!!    Real Talk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason for our protest was for local artists air spins and to have more African American dj’s. As a result of our protests “Future Flavours” was started and Tony B’s work load increased at KUBE. But sorry to say, as far as airspins is concerned it ain’t happening except for on J-Moore’s late Sunday night program “Sunday Night Sound Sessions” Also “Streetbeat” with host Tony B has NEVER had myself on as a guest to discuss my almost TWO DECADES broadcasting. The question is why? Is it Tony B and his ego or his boss at KUBE93? I don’t know, only Tony knows.

Do you want to continue to be “ghetto celebrities” or do you want to do what my friend Davy D says in the above article? Time will tell. Stop the sleep walking artists. Stop being afraid to take a stand. Organize, build your pickett’s and let KUBE 93 know that you want radio air spins during prime time on KUBE just like they did at Power 93 in L.A. and KMEL in the Bay.

Cats were not afriad in SF and LA. Hundreds hit the street. IT CAN HAPPEN HERE IN SEATTLE.

Another thing is I am tired of is hearing hard core gangsta rappers or just rappers and urban artists fall into KUBE to be interviewed by Eric Powers and for some reason the terrible Dirty Harry. As a OG African American in the game it just turns my tummy to hear the so called interviews. It hurts big time.

OK, these are my feelings, please read the above link and remember NOTHING  has changed at KUBE since 97 as far as prime time radio spins. The ball is in the artists court.  What are the artists going to do?

Finally, I think it is a shame that KUBE has blocked my coverage of the KUBE Summer Jam for the last five years. Meanwhile they allow artists to use the word “nigga” and other words with young kids in the audience.

KUBE will not have warnings to parents and guardians on the KUBE website or on the air or on the tickets. All KUBE cares about is making $$$ of the BACKS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN ARTISTS. After the SJ, they run to the bank.

My friend Julie, why don’t you take the lead?

MJ Makes Comments On James & Heat/James Possible Home?

ARTICLE FROM blackbloggers.com (Full story click here)

The REAL king, Micheal Jordan made some comments regarding LeBron James and Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh joining together in Miami on the Heat and they were not good.

He basically said he would not have called Larry Bird, Magic Johnson or Charles Barkley etc to form a super team in the NBA. The is a blast of James by MJ. By the way I wonder how James feels about this because MJ is his idol.

James is getting plenty negative pub all over the place for his bolting from the Cavs. In Cleveland he is really getting negative press in the newspapers on TV and the net and of course from Cavs fans.

And word has leaked about the possible new multi-million dollar home he may move into soon in the Miami area. And folks when you see the pics (above link) you will know the cat has some real dough in his pockets.

I think differently on James and Wade and Bosh. I don’t like the move by these three. It is that simple. I do not like the move.

Please watch “Music Inner City TV” on Comcast On-Demand all over Western Washington state 24/7! Just grab you remote and go to “music” and look for our programs.

And listen to “Music Inner City Radio” every Friday night at 10pm on 1150am KKNW in the Seattle area and streaming online at www.1150kknw.com
